About Us

Nigerian Spinners and Dyers Limited (NSD) was incorporated on 3rd July, 1969 with Incorporation No RC 6313 and commenced operations in November, 1969 as a wholly owned business of the Akle family.

The Company was set up as a Worsted Spinning Mill to use long staple fibres such as wool, viscose, acrylic etc. to produce specialised knitting and embroidery yarns. Using the Worsted System, NSD produces weaving, sewing and embroidery yarns from both synthetic and natural long staple fibres. It is also capable of utilising short staple cotton fibres but only after initial processing by other spinners using the Cotton System. It used to be the only large-scale producer of these yarns in West Africa.

The Company occupies 3.8 acres of prime industrial estate in Kano and has installed capacity to produce 3 million kilograms of yarn per annum and dye 5 million kilograms of yarn per annum respectively.

The plant is highly versatile both in the range of yarns it can produce but also in its dyeing ability. For former it is capable of producing 20 – 30 different kinds of yarns varying in thickness and composition depending on market requirement at the time. For the latter its wide versatility in dyeing is recognised by other textile manufacturers who utilise NSD on a fee basis to dye their own yarns. The Company’s output is utilised mostly by the cottage industry although it has in the past also produced yarns for carpet manufacturers. Due to the nature of its market, demand is difficult to estimate although it has been estimated that the cottage industry alone consumes nearly 120 million kilograms per annum. With the wide disparity between NSD’s installed capacities and market demand the Company has in its decades of operation always had to compete with imported finished equivalents. Depending on either the regulatory or economic climate the level of competition with imports has varied.

Operation

Nigerian Spinners and Dyers Limited “NSD” is the pioneer and largest Worsted Spinning Mill in Nigeria. Worsted Spinning processes Long Staple (exclusively greater than 75mm in mean/median length) Natural, Synthetic and Artificial Fibres (Wool, Acrylic, Nylon, Viscose etc.) to produce specialized Knitting and Embroidery Yarns. This is different from Short Staple (or cotton) spinning that can only process fibres up to 50mm in length.

Hitherto the principal raw material inputs constituted Long Staple Fibre Tops. A Conversion Plant to convert Filament Tow; the earlier raw material ingredient, into Fibre Tops was introduced progressively from July 2007 – a logical “Backward Integration step”. The introduction of this technology to Nigeria was recognized by National Office for Technology Acquisition and Procurement “NOTAP”.

Capacity

NSD has a capacity to produce 4.5 million kilograms of Yarn per annum. Cottage Industry alone annually consumes 130 million kilograms of Yarn. The main competition comes from imported equivalents, the level of which has varied dependent on hitherto regulatory or economic climate. There are two other Worsted Spinning Mills in Nigeria. Market demand is not a limiting factor. Knitting, Embroidery and Tailoring are the main consumers: we estimate that we serve approximately 500,000 cottage-type industries.

NSD has consolidated and expanded its capacity to produce a large volume and wide range of worsted yarns by investing both in her machinery and know how. Further Vertical Integration is possible and desirable such that NSD (or a future Group Sister Company) may provide a large part of the yarns and expertise / know-how to weave and/or knit materials (for blankets, shawls, fashion or garments) usually imported into Nigeria.

Process & Products

NSD produces over 100 standard items in its four main primary product ranges and 3 Secondary products while always ready and able to produce yarns to order for industrial or large orders.
